Myanmar. It’s my first time to visit this country and I felt so excited to explore the main sightseeing spot SHWEDAGON PAGODA which means the golden temple in Yangon.
It’s my first time to be in Yangon, Myanmar. I can’t believe it’s my 23rd Visiting Country in the world! And it’s finally my turn to be in the SHWEDAGON PAGODA which is the famous place full of lots of shiny golden temples with Buddhas around this big golden tower. Especisally in the night, it’s so beautiful with the lights. But you have to cover your shoulder & legs and take off your shoes. I will show you more about my stories here.
Shiny, Shiny, Shiny. I was standing in front of my Sunday Corner. I am not a Buddha Religion big fan, but I believe and respect the Gods in this world WHO would give us good luck and happiness. It’s interesting to see there are so many small golden temples from Monday to Sunday around the Big Golden Tower. I was born on Sunday, so I just need to pray to the Gods belong to Sunday.
Be Aware of your Money as below
About the incredible story in Shwedagon Pagoda, all I could say is that be aware of the people approaching toward you even though a monk in the temple. Let me share with you what to do in the following occasions.
1. 計程車 Taxi
Basically, it could happen in almost every country that the taxi driver would like to add more price if you are a tourist, just insist the price you can offer, otherwise, leave. Next text will accept the price you would like to offer.
2. 門票費 Entry Fee
8,000 MMK is the fixed price for the tourists. It’s the same situation in India that locals will get much benefits to pay only a little bit.
3. 濕紙巾 Wet towel
The story was told from the Thai colleague when she first came to the Shwedagon Pagoda. Her hands got dirty and suddenly someone looked nice to give her the wet towel to let her clean the hands. But this person asked for money afterwards to make my colleague had a bad impression of this place.
4. 自稱義工的和尚 Volunteer Monk
Well, it’s my personal story happened to me and my colleague when we were first be in the Shwedagon Pagoda as well. I had to admit that we didn’t do any homework before we came to Yangon. As for me, I would just like to take the photos and videos of the gorgeous temples for a very simple reason and we could leave.
When i was overwhelming by the sparkle golden light reflected from the temple around me, there was a young monk approaching us. He said he is a English volunteer Teacher and would like to show us around. At first we thought he might look for doing something for money, but he looked so helpfully and said it doesn’t matter how much money we would give so that we let him to go with us and teach us how to pray for the Buddhas.
Actually, I’m not a superstitious person but I did pray for some religious Gods while traveling in order to get easy to know the native culture and the believes. To be honest, especially in the East South or India, my body felt really bad after praying those Gods which are not belong to our culture.
Ok, there are some procedures before praying the Gods in Shwedagon Pagoda. The monk asked us our Birthday to count the lucky number and which God from Monday to Sunday we should pray for. I thought he would leave after telling us what to do. No, he looked very helpful to show us around this area and told us where to walk and which Gold to pray to make a great fortune in the future. He even could read palm to be as a fortune teller. My colleague and I made agreement to give him 4,000 in total as a tip.
But he looked so unhappy when we gave him our kindness feedback. Now, he thought it was such a small amount of money for him to survive. Excuse me? You are a monk and why you need so much money and at first he said we could give whatever we want. And he asked us: “Do you know how much is the entry price? It should be over 8,000 for each person! 4,000 MMH is not enought!”
“So, how much you want or usually people gave you?” we asked. “15,000 MMH! ”, he said. We didn’t argue with him because we respect him as a monk and we didn’t know the living cost standard in this country until we came back and went to the food court in the mall.
The price of a dumpling noodle soup only costs a little bit more than 1,000 MMH. At that time, we found we were cheated by the monk and felt so unpleased. If I knew this would happen, I would rather just go around and would not believe what he said those Gods would help you to make a big money.
So, I just want to share my personal experience for you if Shwedagon Pagoda is your travel destination. Just be awareness! If you think money can solve any problems and I would not say anything.
Many people might be curious about the result after praying for the Gods in Shwedagon Pagoda, did become more luckier? No, absolutely NOT during that period. If it works, why so many people in Myanmar are still poor and couldn’t change their living environment?
